‘STATELESS’ MEN.
WIN APPEAL AGAINST DEPORTATION. LONDON, April 6. The Court of Criminal Appeal yesterday held, that no effect could be given to a recommendation for deportation in respect of two men who were stated to have no nationality. They were Jacob Goldfarb and Arthur Judah Szczensliye, and it was stated that they had been sentenced to 12 months’ and 18 months’ hard labour respectively for receiving stolen property. The deputy-chairman of London Sessions had also recommended their deportation. Mr T. R. F. Butler, for Goldfarb, said both men were “Stateless,” in other words, they were nationals of no country, with the result thao no order of deportation could be effective against them. They had li.ved in this country for many years. Giving judgment, Mr Justice Talbot said it seemed clear that the deputychairman of Sessions made the deportation order because he was under the impression, which was encouraged by the police, that it would facilitate the making by the Home Secretary ol quite a different class of order—one under the Aliens Order of 1920.
