Tradesmen’s Racing Club—A special general meeting of tire members of the Tradesmen’s Racing Club was held at the Commercial Hotel on Thursday evening. There was a fair attendance and Mr J- C. Duncan occupied the chair. The statement of accounts from the summer meeting showed receipts amounting to £336 Is 3d and a credit balance of £24 9s lid. Members expressed themselves as highly pleased with the result. A special vote of thanks was passed to Mr T. Quill for the eificent manner in which he had performed his duties as handicapper and treasurer.

Opening of the Club—At a meeting of the committee of the Ashburton Club last night it was decided to hold a smoke concert to celebrate the opening of the club, after the annual general meeting on Tuesday next. Refreshments will be provided free of charge. A °Punitive Voyage.—The German man-o’-war, Albatross, lias returned to Sydney from the Islands. During the cruise she inflicted severe punishment on the natives of the New Ireland and New Britain groups for their murder of Europeans. The villages were shelled, and 40 natives were killed and a large number wounded. Electricity l in Palace.—Queen Victoria has ordered that Buckingham Palace be lit with’electricity. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” April 15, 1911). Mr Massey’s Address—Mr W. F. Massey, M.P., Leader of the Opposition, officially informed Mr W T . Nosworthy, M.P., on Thursday that he will deliver a. political address in Ashburton on a Thursday on the return journey from his next southern trip. The exact date is not yet fixed, but it will be in about five or six weeks’ time. On Thursday night Mr Massey broke his journey at Rakaia, where he stayed with Mr C. A. C. Hardy, M.P., going on to Christchurch/bn Good Friday.

Volunteer Goes to Coronation.— Sergeant T. Doherty of the Ashburton Mounted Rifles, and a member of the New Zealand Coronation Contingent, leaves Wellington next Thursday by the Arawa for London. The whole of the Canterbury contingent will be leaving by the same boat. Town Clerk Arrives—Mr Alfred McClure, who was recently appointed Town Clerk of Ashburton in succession to the late Mr H. H. Fooks, an-ived in town by the first express from the south this afternoon, and was welcomed by the Mayor (Mr H. Davis). Church of Christ Conference —The business sessions of the 26th annual conference of the Associated Churches of Christ (Southern District) opened at the Church of Christ, Ashburton, on Good Friday. Pastor F. W. Greenwood (president) occupied the chair.
