CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB, MIGHT WINS SOCKBURN. (Special to the “ Guardian.”) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting was opened at Riccarton yesterday in dull but pleasant weather, and there was a large gathering of racegoers from all parts of New Zealand. The track was in excellent order, and the racing was considered by patrons to be the most interesting seen at an autumn fixture for many years. Speculation was very satisfactory, and in spite of an unfortunate holding up of the dividends in the third race there was a substantial increase in the totalisator turnover. The sum of £35,858 (win £17,147, place £18,711) was handled, as against £32,027 10s on Easter Monday last year, an increase of £3830 10s.

There was fine weather, and the track was in good order. A large attendance saw keen racing. The totalisator handled £53,832, against £34,474 10s for the corresponding day last year (when the weather was wet), an increase of £10,357 10s. The total for the meeting was £102,291, against £74,806, an increase of £27,485. Knight of Australia surprised by winning the H. O. Nolan Handicap to return a dividend of nearly a score.
