VIOLENT GALE

INTER-ISLAND STEAMER LATE. FOUR HOURS BEHIND TIME. RACEHORSES SUFFER GREATLY. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHUR CH, This Day. The inter-island steamer Maori berthed at Lyttelton this morning at 10.45, four hours late, after battling through a violent gale during the night. The Maori was an Hour late in leaving Wellington, having been delayed oil account of having to load 23 trotting horses from the Hutt Park meeting. The vessel carried 300 passengers. Regular travellers said theyi had experienced worse trips, but not many. Deck cabin passengers said the water had been flung right over the top of the ship. The worst sufferers were probably the horses, which became very restless and had to be short-tied. A special train was run to the south to enable passengers to complete their journey. Bright sunshine prevailed over North Canterbury to-day, and all the floods are rapidly dropping. The special express train, which carried 80 passengers, reached Ashburton at 2 o’clock. LAGMHOR CREEK OVERFLOWS.

TINWALD STREETS FLOODED. SOME CULVERTS WASHED AWAY. Parts of Tinwald were inundated yesterday when the heavy rain caused the Lagmhor Creek to overflow its bank* just above the township. The creek broke its banks, and flowed down through the township. Water was spread everywhere, and extended to a distance of about three miles. The railway station was almost surrounded by water, which lay three feet deep oil the west side of the station, but train running was not interfered with. The flood caused extensive scouring on the roads, and culverts were washed away. Several fowls are reported to have been drowned.
