MT. SOMERS GYMKHANA.

A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. To raise funds for improvements to the Mount Somers Memorial Hall a gymkhana was held on Mr C. J. Johnston’s property on Saturday. Gloriously hot weather prevailed, and there was a good attendance. The programme included a number of spectacular events, and reflected credit on the officials, the committee, the chairman (Mr A. N. Grigg), lion, secretary (Mr F. AV. Gifkins) and assistant secretary (Mr H. Milson), and the treasurer (Mr L. H. Ruddock). The officials were: Field events, Messrs L. Wood, L. King, G. AV. Sandrey and J. G. Green 3 horse and pony events, Messrs S. M. Chaffey, L. H. ituddoek, G. J. Foreman, AV. It. Glasson; judges, Messrs A. A'. Grigg and E. AV. Leask 3. Stalls and side-shows were kept busy during the afternoon. Those in charge were: Fruit salad, Mesdames L. H. Ruddock, L. King, G. W. Sandrey and W. J. Oomyns; soft drinks, Mrs W. R. Glasson and Miss D. Glasson; icecream, Mrs R. Edgar; sweets, Mesdames F. W. Gifkins and J. A. Mears; competitions, Messrs J. A. Mears and G. L. Hood and members of Ashburton Motor-cycle Club. In the evening an enjoyable dance was held in the Memorial Hall, music being supplied by Cook’s orchestra (Lyndhurst), with extras by Mrs W. McClimont. Mr G. Clark was M.C. Lucky spot waltzes were won by W. Kingsbury and Miss J. Green, and T. Honeybone and Mrs Ritchie. Items were given by Messrs E. Cox and T. H. Farley.
