FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian, Mar. 6, 1883). Birds Heads and Eggs.—At a meeting of the County Council in February a return showing the number of birds’ heads and eggs which had been paid for by the Council, and the districts in which they were collected was asked for. The return was laid on the table yesterday, and from it we learn that in the South Eakaia Road District 35,750 heads and eggs were collected, tor which he Council paid £26 16s 3d; Upper Ashburton, 50,746, £3B Is 2d; ii.ongbeach, 98,793, N £74 Is lid; Waltahui, 121,450, £9l Is 9d; Mount Hutt, 15,033, £ll 5s 6d. The total number of heads and eggs collected was 321,772, the Council’s subsidy toward which was £241 6s 7d. Completion of Traffic Bridge.—The Ashburton Traffic Bridge is now completed. Mr W. C. Walker, the chairman, has been deputed by the County Council to arrange as he may think fit for the opening of the bridge for traffic. The Ashburton Volunteers.—A Church parade of the Ashburton Volunteers takes place to-morrow. It is proposed to parade all the South Canterbury Volunteers at Timaru on March 25, with a»view to instruction in outpost duties, advance and rear guards, etc. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Mar. 6, 1911.) Visit of Minister.—A “Guardian” correspondent telegraphs from Marton Junction that the Won. Thomas Mackenzie (Minister of Agriculture) has accepted an invitation to be present at tiie banquet to Mr John Grigg on 1) eisday night. He will arrive in Ashburton I v the second express from the north that day, and will leave for Dunedin by the first express on Friday. Telegram to Premier. —The Mayor (Mr H. Davis) sent a telegram to Sir Joseph Ward yesterday wishing him “bon voyage” on his trip to England to the Coronation. The Premier sent the following reply “Please accept and convey to ine Borough Council and residents of Ashburton my cordial thanks for their good wishes for a successful mission. Band Rotunda.—The band rotunda i in Baring Square West is reaching completion, and it is said that for all practical purposes the structure will he equal to anything in the Dominion. There are those who regret that the Borough Ctvncil does not see its way to make the main entrance from West Street. At the very least, when the. rotunda is completed, steps should be tai-en to beautify the square
