PERSONAL.

Mr Justice Northcroft has consented to be the principal speaker at the Anzac Day service at Ashburton. Mr H. E. Jessap was to-day appointed a member of the Ashburton Hospital Board in place of the late Mr G. S. Hardy. Mr F. M. Laing, cf the staff of the National Bank of New Zealand, Ashburton, has been appointed to the Wellington staff of the bank, and will leave, to take up his new duties to-morrow. Mr Caughey, of Wellington, has been appointed to succeed him. Superintendent L. J. Kidd (Ashburton Fire Brigade) and Fireman A. C. Argylc (Allenton Fire Brigade) will leave to-day to attend the. conference cf the United Fire Brigades of New Zealand at Hastings on Monday. Mr S. Alexander, who has been accountant at the Ashburton branch of the National Bank of New Zealand for some years, has received notification of his transfer, on promotion, to the Christchurch branch. He will be succeeded' by Mr G. H. Smith, of Otautau. Brigadier T. Buttimore, of Christchurch, who was in charge of the Ashburton Salvation Army Corps about 20 years ago, will conduct the harvest thanksgiving services which will be held at the Ashburton Army Citadel during the week-end. He will be accompanied by Adjutant G. H. Pratt, who was also stationed at Ashburton several years ago. The period, cf service of Commander B. C. B. Brooke in command of H.M.S. Philomel and as officer in charge of the Devonport Naval Base will expire shortly, and Commander Brooke will return to England in about a month. He will be relieved by Commander C. B. Tinley, who will arrive in New Zealand before Commander Brooke’s departure. Commander Brooke was appointed to the New Zealand Division cf the Royal Navy in August, 1933.

The following officers have been elected at the annual meeting of fife Mid-Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Men Teachers’ Guild, when the president (Mr S. G. Maefarlane) presided.:—President, Mr S. G. Macfarlane ; vice-president, Mr H. Colqulioun ; honorary secretary and treasurer, Mr W. Hunter; committee, Messrs E. S. Chambers, 1). F. Macdonald and S. W. Gower (town), E, H. Bastion and A. Mackie (country); honorary auditor, Mr A. J. Rawstcrn.

Mr A. McNeil, who will retire this month after many years as an inspector of primary schools in Canterbury and was tendered a complimentary social b,y members of the Mid-Can-terbury Education Institute last evening. There was a large, attendance. The president of the institute (Mr S. W. Gower) presented. Mr McNeil with brass hook-ends and a brass tray from members, and wished him happiness in his retirement. Air W. Service, who will succeed Mr McNeil, was welcomed.
