THREE YEARS' HARD.
SENTENCE PASSED ON A WOMAN. GUILTY OF INCENDIARISM. (Per Press Association.)? WANGANUI, Tlds Day. Mr Justice Osier sentenced Florence Alberta Birss, a married woman, aged 29, of Ohakune, to three years' imprisonment with hard labour for setting fire to a dwelling. His Honor said it was difficult to know what to do with a woman in her condition, and the jury had complicated matters somewhat by its recommendation to mercy. It was obvious that the jury did not know the whole facts. Certain evidence which he thought admissable had been excluded in order to give her the fairest trial possible. He had little doubt she had caused two other fires, and had terrorised the neighbourhood by her threats of fires.
