DECLARED INSANE.
MAN ACCUSED OF MURDER. V " (Per Press Association.) WANGANUI, February 16. When Alexander MeAlpine was charged at the Supreme Court with the attempted murder of John Stephen Walsh, at Ohalcune, on December 5, the Crown Prosecutor (Mr N. R. Bain) intimated that accused had been under observation at Porirua Mental Hospital since the preliminary hearing and the medical superintendant (Dr. G. B. D, Hart) and Dr. D. Hunter were prepared to certify that he was insane and did not understand the nature of his defence. A jury was empanelled and heard the doctors’ evidence, when it returned a verdict that MeAlpine was so insano that he was unable to plead. Mr Justice Ostler ordered that MoAlpine be detained in the mental hospital during the pleasure of the Minister of Justice.
