COUNTY AFFAIRS.

DECISIONS OF THE COUNCIL. The meeting of the Ashburton County Council was continued yesterday after the “Guardian” went to press. A copy of the new schedule of rates imposed by the carriers in Ashburton County was received from the No. 8 District Transport Licensing Authority. Mr Carr said he was troubled by the thought whether the smaller men were brought into the agreement as to prices by threats, as had been stated. One wondered how long the wheat-growing industry would survive under cartage prices such as had been fixed, with increases of up to 3d a sack for grain. Mr Lambie said he was not paying any more this year than he did last year. Members said that if there was any suspicion of a combine operating, the Council should protest and request the Licensing Authority to grant more roving licenses. It was agreed to 'write to the Authority on the lines suggested.

An appeal for support in the building of a memorial to Sir Arthur Dudley Dobson at Arthur’s Pass, was received from the Canterbury Progress Leaguo. A total sum of £SOO was required. It was agreed to make a grant of five guineas. An invitation to members to attend the opening of the Allenton Fire Brigade station on February 29 was received from the Brigade secretary and was accepted. The Council confirmed the special order bringing about the abolition of the Coldstream Road Board district.
