SMITHFIELD MEN DEFEATED. EFFECT OF SWIFT ORGANISATION OTHER UNIONS REFUSE TO HELP. (United Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Dav, 10.30 n.m.) LONDON, February 6. Tho strike of shopmen at Smithficld appears to be 1 collapsing. The men are expected to resume work at the weekend. They have been beaten by the swift organisation of transport and temporary meat depots at the railway stations, docks and secret points in the suburbs. Tho strikers sought the help of the dockers and railway workers, who refused, as the union leaders arc opposed to a strike. The whole of the 400 tons of meat that has arrived at Smithfield since the strike commenced was sold; yesterday under police protection. -The prices of all supplies slightly advanced in the suburban markets. The strikers admit that the} gambled on winning in four days, and they lost because the butchers easily obtained alternative supplies. UNION OFFICIALS URGE WORK. MEN ACT WITHOUT AUTHORITY. (Received This Day, 1.50 p.m.) LONDON, February 6. The strike at the Smithfield meat market continues, but steps taken by meat employers and wholesale merchants have enabled the butcheis all over London to obtain ample supplies of both chilled and fresh-killed meat, and no shortage is likely during the next few days. Meanwhile efforts to bring the strike to an end are being continued., and the union officials are renewing then efforts to persuade the men to resume work, which they left without the authority of the leaders There has been no open sympathetic action bv workers elsewhere, apart from the* strike of a few men engaged at the Aldgate kosher meat market.— British Official Wireless
