He added that his Majestv summoned Mr MacDonald and said: “I think it.is all wrong that you who have been Prime Minister so long should not be present at the State opening of Parliament. Accordingly, I invite you as Lord President to stand behind me when I read the address.” Lord Blanesburgh added that that was characteristic of King George at his best, although the intention was not fulfilled, as the State opening did not take place, owing to the death of Princess Victoria. Queen Mary received so< many letters and messages of condolence from school children that she has asked, the Minister of Education to convey her thanks to them.
CONDOLENCE FROM COMMONS. LONDON, February 5. In the House of Commons this afternoon a message from Queen Mary was read, in reply to the House’s address of condolence. Queen Mary stated: “I thank you with all my heart for your message of condolence, which helps to sustain me in my grief. I am deeply sensible of the warmth of your sympathy, and I prize the assurance which you give me of the unalterable affection of your House.”—British Official Wireless. SYMPATHY WITH FREE STATE. ; f 1 T T ' * - MESSAGE FROM MR ROOSEVELT. (Received This Day, 12.30 p.m.) DUBLIN, February 6. Mr Eanion do Valera stated in the Dail that the Governor-General had received a message from President Roosevelt on the occasion of the death of King George, expressing “sympathy on the great loss you have sustained.” The Governor-General suitably replied.
