BOXING.
JACK CARROLL DEFEATS VAN KLAVEREN. SYDNEY, February 6. It is estimated that over 20,000 spectators attended the open-air boxing carnival in the Sydney Sports Ground to-night. The weather was overcast, hut remained fine. The main contest was the return fight between the Dutchman, Bep van
Klaveren (lOst 91b) and the Australian welter-weight champion, Jack Carroll (lOst 81b). The ' latter was again crowned the winner in a somewhat one-sided bout, in which van Klaveren took terrific punishment. Blood flowing from a wound on the right eye and a damaged mouth severely handicapped him from the third round onwards. Carroll went after his man almost from the beginning. He rained blows with both hands to the body and face, and frequently had the Dutchman hanging over the ropes. The latter sought a knock-out with his right, but Carroll was always too wily and got to close quarters, where, with an exchange of right and left blows, he took the fire out of his opponent. By the time the thirteenth round was reached Carroll just played with the Dutchman, who, was a blood-bespat-tered, sorry figure at the end. In an early supporting contest of 10 rounds, Joe Hall (9st 4lb) outpointed Billy Carr (9st l*lb). A return contest for the light-weight title between Alf Blatcli (9st 731 b), the title-holder, and Herb Bishop (9st 81b) was stopped in the fifth round owing to Bishop injuring a leg. TOD MORGAN RETIRING. SYDNEY, February 6. The American boxer, Tod, Morgan, has decided to. retire from the ring and live in Australia. Morgan has injured his left elbow, which will prevent him from continuing his fighting career.
