Matthews, the brilliant Canterbury distance runner, broke the New Zealand two-mile record at a handicap meeting on the Lancaster Park track last evening. His time, 9min 17 3-ssec, was two-fifths of a second inside the record he himself established at Napier last December, and his form suggested that ho should be capable of even better figures if he is ever extended.
