LOSS OF FIVE LIVES
DAMAGE IN NORTHERN FLOODS HISTORIC MAORI CHURCH DESTROYED STOCK DROWNED, HOUSES WRECKED Details of the gale that raged over the greater part of the North Island on Saturday and Sunday show that it was responsible for the loss of five lives —a man who was blown off a roof at Palmerston North, two lads, one of whom died from exposure while lost in the bush in the Masterton district and one who was hilled by a falling branch, a Maori farmer who was killed near Raglan as a result of a truck skidding over a bank and a miner who was buried in his shack in a slip near Thames. ® ars D^ re expressed for the safety of a man and his son who left New Flymouth in a fishing launch on Saturday night and have not since been heard of. In all districts the damage to property was considerable. The historic Maori church at Ohinemutu, Rotorua, was demolished. There has been great loss of stock, and in the Hawke s Bay district the fruit-growing industry has suffered to an extent estimated at between £IOO,OOO and £120,000.
