INTENSE COLD.

AMERICA'S ATLANTIC SEABOARD ISLAND OUT OFF BY ICE. (United Press Association—Copyright), NEW YORK, February 2. A wave of intense cold along the Atlantic seaboard, extending into tho mid-West, has continued for 14 days. The temperature is below freezing point, and in addition there lias been an unusually heavy list of' accidents and deaths from cold. The food and coal situation has become acute in many districts. Fifteen hundred inhabitants on a small island, Tangier Island, in Chesapeake Bay, near Washington, are actually in danger of starvation as they are completely ice-bound. A small dirigible managed to fly over and drop half a ton of supplies, but this was completely inadequate. Coastguard cutters are attempting to break through. New York harbour is becoming increasingly filled with ice, and only by the continual use of tugs as ice-break-ers are ferry and ship lanes kept open. Traffic in other harbours is likewise impeded.
