FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Feb. 4, 1886). Licensing Faction —The annual election for five persons to form a committee for the licensing district of the Borough of Ashburton will be held at the Borough Council Chambers, Baring Square West, Ashburton, on Wednesday, February 19. Mr Charles Braddell is the returning officer. A Murderous \yeapon —In an assault case, which came before the Resident Magistrate ofi Tuesday, the hilarity of the spectators in. the court was provoked by the production of the “weapon” with which both parties accused the others of having committed the assault. It was a stout looking stick, some three or four feet in length and as thick as a man’s wrist, bearing at one end a large nail of most murderous appearance. The Harvest—The owner of a threshing mill, which started operations last week in the niighbourhood of Ashburton reports that the new crop so far is threshing out exceedingly well, the yield being far better than had, been anticipated, and the grain plump and heavy 7. Mr Gladstone’s Ministry—Mr Gladstone has had an audience with Her Majesty the Queen at Osborne, and has accepted the task of forming a Ministry. The- House of Commons stands adjourned till Thursday next. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Feb. 4, 1911). Borough Counciller Serenaded—At the conclusion of their open-air concert in Baring Square on Thursday evening, the members of the Ashburton County Brass Band serenaded Mr G. D. H. Hefford, on the occasion of his election as a counciller of the Borough of Ashburton. Mr Hefford is the band’s president. Reception to Cricket Team—Seven young men cycled to Christchurch from Ashburton in order to be present at the public reception to the Canterbury cricket team on Friday. Hakatere Club—The monthly meeting of the, committee of the Hakatere Young Men’s 'Club' was held last evening, when Mr M. J. Moriarty presided. A letter was read from Mr John Studholme accepting the position of patron to the elub„ and congratulating the institution on its financial position. Saleyards Property—When the question of offering, under new condtions, the County Saleyards property —which is owned by the Council —was under consideration ai the monthly meeting of the County Council, two interested members withdrew during the greater part of the time the matter was under consideration, and otherwise took no active part in the proceedings.
