BOWLING.
NEW ZEALAND TOURNAMENT.
NEARING THE FINAL STAGES.
(Pax- Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. With games concentrated on the St. Albans green to-day, the New Zealand bowling championship tournament is rapidly nearing"its final stages in all sections. At the close of play yesterday only five rinks remained. There were six pairs and five singles players left to fight out the issue this morning. Two rinks games were played, one team having a bye, and in addition a singles and a pairs game were played. The weather was fine and warm and the green was in excellent order, but a strong north-west wind blowing across the line of play made conditions tricky. It is not likely that finality will be reached to-day in the singles and pairs, but the rinks title may be decided late this afternoon. Details are: — Singles. Second Round Final Draw. King (Elmwood) 17, Alloo (Owaka) 15. ' ' . _ Alloo thus lost one of his lives. He will play Livingstone in the third round. Evidently the Owaka player was off his game as the result of the tricky wind affecting his wide-drawing bowls. All through the early stages of the game both men were drawing consistently. Alloo soon drew away, and with half the board covered the score was 13-4 in his favour. Not until the fourteenth head did King commence to make much impression. On the next few heads he scored two, three, two and two, leaving him only one down. Alloo was in for a brace, but on the nineteenth the men were 15 all. After a burnt head King got ahead for the first time —16-15. The final head was a Avide one, both players finding the right green hard to pick up. Aftei King had drawn the shot Alloo rested him out, but with his last shot King lay the shot, and Alloo failed to remove him. Pairs. First Round. Napier (Bryan and Bell, skip) 18, United (Castle and Smith, skip) 11. Eliminated: United. Rinks* Fourth Round. Canterbury (Haworth) 26, Auckland (Walker) 14; West End, Auckland (Bremner) 14, Dunedin (Anderson) 11 ((unfinished within the time limit); Edgeware (Gagliardi) had a bye. One life: Canterbury, West End, Auckland, Dunedin and Edgeware. Eliminated: Auckland.
