ATTACKED BY DOGS

MAN AND BOY INJURED.

OX BLAKETOWN BEACH

(Special to the " Guardian.")

GREYMOUTH, January 14

A man and a boy were attacked by dogs on the Blaketown beach, a popular bathing resort near the mouth of the Grey Hirer, to-day, and the occurrences necessitated the investigation of the police. Frederick Gilbert, a married man, of Blaketown, was attacked this morning by two Kerry Bine dogs, which were imported animals. Gilbert, who is custodian of the dogs, was exercising them on the beach when they suddenly became ferocious and attacked him. He was severely bitten on the arms and legs, the dogs having got him down on the ground, and it was due in no small degree to the challenges of Gilbert's Scottish terrier that he was enabled to ward the dogs off and make his escape. The dogs were recaptured and placed in custody in Gilbert's stables. /

Gilbert, who received medical attention from Br. Moore, was taken to his home at Blaketown and he was incapacitated for some time. The second incident, which occurred about -1 p.m., was fortunately accompanied by less serious results. A Mrs Pollard in company with her nephew aged 14, who is on a holiday visit to Greymouth, and an infant child, was coming away from the beach when a dog was suddenly noticed to be rushing toward the younger child. The child was quickly snapped up by the elder boy, who saw the impending danger, but he was then attacked and the back was torn out of his bathing suit. He received minor bruising and scratching. The dog was one of five Kerry Blues. Along with two more members of the kennel it had escaped by burrowing its way out underneath the floor of an old loose box in the stable at Blaketown in which it was kept unchained.

On a previous occasion a young man who was training for running at Victoria Park was also badly, bitten by these dogs when they broke free from their attendant.
