SLASHED WITH RAZOR.

AFFRAY IN WELLINGTON STREET (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 10. . Acting on rumour this, afternoon, detectives definitely established that an affray, in what is presumed to be a safety razor blade was used, occurred in Lambton Quay to-day near the intersection of Panama Street. One man had his face badly slashed, but neither he nor his assailant has yet been identified. A shop assistant in Lambton Quay said this afternoon that he was attracted by a commotion in front of his windows and ran out in time to see a tall, heavily built man run towards Willis Street, leaving a smaller man holding the right side of his face which was bleeding profusely from a gash. The attack caused a sensation in the vicinity, but both men managed to escape in the thickening crowd. The injured man is stated to have been treated by a chemist but no chemist in that part of the Quay admitted attending him. Detectives are still investigating the matter.

It is further stated that some time after the attack the police received a telephone message from a city hotel, the speaker saying: "'lf you want me you can come and get me," and giving the name of the hotel from which he was speaking. When the detectives arrived, however, they could find no trace -of the man they sought.
