SEEKING REFUGE.
FLIGHT FROM GANGSTERS. (United Press Association—Copyright.) SAN FRANCISO, January 7. The Monterey, sailing from San Francisco, carried Kenneth "Wakefield and bis wife, who created a sensation by admitting that they were seeking refuge in Australia, fleeing from America’s gangsters. ■ Mr Wakefield, proprietor of the famous Tollhouse Hostelry in Whatman, Massachusetts, told of harrowing experiences. He said he bad been terrorised by bandits, who forced him to surrender his wealth at the revolverpoint. Mr Wakefield expects to remain in Australia for three months, hoping that the United States in the meanwhile will conquer banditry.
