PLAN FOR PEACE.
NEW SEARCH TO BE MADE. ACTIVITY AMONG THE NATIONS. (United Press Association —Copyright.) LONDON, January 8. The Rome correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” says the first anniversary of the signing of the Romo pact by Signor Mussolini and M. Laval is marked by a series of inspired articles in the more serious newspapers and by a revival of diplomatic activity. Signor Mussolini conferred with his ambassadors in Palis and Brussels, and M. .Laval conferred with the French Ambassador in Rome, who is at present in Paris. Nothing has been published about these meetings, but it is generally believed that they are connected with M. Laval’s new attempt to find a satisfactory solution of the Abyssinian crisis. It is insisted that Italy stands by the Rome Pact and the policy of collaboration laid down by M. Laval and Signor Mussolini, but it is emphasised that “Italy cannot collaborate for peace in Europe until she has won her own peace in East Africa.” The Paris correspondent of the “News-Chronicle” says M. Laval’s effort to secure a new Abyssinian peace plan before the League Council meets on January 20 to discuss the oil sanction is twofold: First, be wishes to avoid reappearing as the author of any new plan, and, second, he will take no initiative without written assurances of Signor Mussolini s readiness to negotiate. He also stipulates that the Committee of Thirteen at Geneva should he used to originate any new proposals.
