SWIMMING.
NEW SOUTH WALES CHAMPIONSHIPS. SUCCESS OF NEW ZEALANDER, SYDNEY, January 6. The New Zealand swimmer, P. Mathieson (Otago) won the 110 yards backstroke championship of New South Wales at Manly baths to-night by two yards from the title-holder and the Australian Olympic representative, R. V. Clark. Because of the residential qualification, Clark retains the title. Mathieson led throughout, completing the first 55 yards in 35 seconds. He lost a little of his lead at the turn, but was not troubled to win in the sprint home. The placings were: P. Mathieson 1, R. V. Clark 2, R. Ireland 3. Eight competed. Time, lmin losec. The best time by an Australian for the distance is lmin 12 l-ssec, set by Clark last year. H. R. Biddulph, the 16-year-old Sydnew swimmer, broke the Australian and New Zealand junior record when he won the third heat of the 110 yards junior championship in 65 2-ssec. The previous record, held P- Oliver, of Western Australia, was 66 2-ssec. Swimming in impressively easy style, the other New Zealander, W. J. Jarvis, was not troubled to win in the sprint the 110 yards inter-club handicap from scratch, giving the limit man Msec. Results: W. J. Jarvis (scr) 1, F. Power (4sec) 2, A. Allsop (ssec) 3. Won by two yards. Time, lmin 7sec.
