NEW ZEALAND TOURNAMENT. FIRST DAY OF THE SINGLES. CHRISTCHURCH, January 6. The New Zealand Bowling Association's twenty-ninth annual tournament was started to-day. The competitors include many of the best known and most successful bowlers in New Zealand, and no fewer than 26 former title-holders are playing. A. J. Engrebetsen (Napier Club), winner of the singles championship last year, is not defending his title, and H. G. Loveridge and R ; N. Pilkington, of Hamilton, who won the pairs championship last year, were also unable to attend. The Grey Lynn rink, with H. Whittle as skip, which won the rinks championship last year, is again competing. A party of New South Wales bowlers and C. P. and K. I. Cross, of the Isle of Wight, are also entrants in the pairs and rinks. At the end of the day's play the following players remain in:— With two lives: F. D. Whibley (Greymouth), H. P.
