FEATURE SUCCESS OF YOUTH. i __ i."' Surprises marked the N.S.W. championships almost from the start to finish, commencing AA'ith the poor display of Fred Perry against Breakspear, a shoAving that was explained when the champion notified he would be unable to play again in Australia this summer. There folloAved the termination of the Hopman-McGrath match, with the Sydney player suddenly retiring. Then came the defeat of Crawford; vieAved as a certain champion Avith Perry out of the way. The series of unexpected happenings culminated with the success of Thelma Coyne over Joan Hartigan. It Avas a Aveek of glorious uncertainty. McGrath's sudden action Avas regrettable. He Avas figuring in a marathon match which no doubt told on his constitution Aveakened by recent illness, and early his opponent, Hopman, showed dynamic energy Avhich further took toll of the Sydney player's physical equipment, but he had taken the fourth set and Avas in a good position in the fifth when he forfeited. No doubt, had he foreseen such a lengthy duel of three hours he Avould have giA-en the Victorian a walk-over. Adrian Quist appeared able to handle the aAvkAvard and very strong wind of Friday better than CraAvford Avhose earlier play, especially against Sproule in the quarter final, Avarranted the belief that he Avould retain the title. Quist Avas . at his best, but Crawford had every chance of Avinning the last set and the match. Thelma Coyne gave a delightful ailround display to take the title from Joan Hartigan, but the younger girl has shown out just as well in many of her earlier games. That she has a avohderful future is the general belief m Sydney. Joan, famed for the ferocity of her forehand, rarely brought it into

play, on the majority of occasions just pushing the ball back rather gently She was below the standard reached before her latest trip abroad and tennis enthusiasts can look forward to more interesting contests between the pair. At times the doubles final between Crawford-McGrath and Quiet and Thompson reached great heights then suddenly dropped to comparative mediocrity. Quist was about the best of the four and received good support from Thompson. Crawford made openings for McGrath to finish. This pair—the winners—were the better combined.
