ATLANTIC SERVICE

AN AIR MAIL INAUGURATED. FROM CROYDON TO SANTIAGO. PASSEXGER LINE PLANNED. (United Press Association—Copyright.) (Received This Day, 11.5 a.m.) LONDON, January 5. The first weekly trans-Atlantic air mail has been inaugurated by France, a 'plane departing from Croydon for Santiago (Chile) via Toulouse, Dakar, Brazil and Buenos Aires, a distance of 9365 miles, for which the schedule is four days, the fastest long-distance flight in the world. The Atlantic will be flown with fourengined flying boats evolved after long experiments. The mail service is the first step to a passenger service in which a 17-ton flying boat, providing sleeping accommodation, and crossing the Atlantic in 15 hours, will be used. Miss Jean Batten sent a message to the undertaking, wishing it good luck.
