SOUTH CANTERBURY MEETINGS. ASHBURTON SUCCESSES. Several Ashburton competitors were successful in New Year sports at Timaru and St. Andrews. L. A. Watson, of Methven, met Avith outstanding athletic successes. He won the mile amateur event at the Timaru Caledonian sports on New Year’s Day from scratch in 4min Slsec, and Avas second in the 880 yards from scratch. Winning the mile from scratch at St. AndreAVS meeting on Thursday, he set up a ugav track record of 4min 26see. He won the 880 yards handicap at this meeting off 10 yards. In the cash athletic events at Timaru, W. Pike (Methven) Avas second in the 880 yards, and first in the mile and second in the 880 yards at St. Andrews. E. C. Samuels, in the cash events at St. Andrews, was second in the first heat of the 100 yards handicap and second in the 220 yards handicap. G. Robertson, a.t St. Andrews, met with successes in the piping events, winning the marches and jigs and hornpipes, and being second in the Strathspeys and reels.
