Barnett was the outhanding feature of play in the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association s Christmas open and handicap tournament yesterday. Dymond and Sea}, playing splendid tennis, scored an unexpected victory over a pair who hare long been recognised as one of the best doubles teams in New Zealand. The finals resulted:— Open Events. Men’s Singles—C. Angas beat A. R. Cant, 6-2, 6-0. . , T Men’s Doubles—H. Dvmond and I. A. Seay beat C. Angas and H. A. Barnett, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. . . . , T Boys’ Singles—M. J. Conch beat N. Armstrong, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Girls’ Singles—Nola Smither heat Fay Fleetwood, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. Bovs’ Doubles—A. 0. Sandston am A, W. Bishop heat M. *T. Corich and W. Prvce-Jones, 6-5, 6-4. Girls’ Doubles—Rae Templeton and Margaret Murray beat Fay Fleetwood and Colleen Chester, 5-6, 6-2, 6-3. Handicap Events. Men’s Singles—A grade: M. McGillivray (owe 30 i) beat N. H. Walsh (owe 15), 9-5. C grade: W. K. Steven (owe
4-6 15) beat A. C. Sandston (owe 4-6 15), 9-4. Women’s Singles—Miss M. Whiteside (owe 4-6 15) beat Mrs A. C. Wilson (owe 15), 9-6. Men’s Doubles —C. G. Kirk and C. B. Beatson (owe 15) beat S. W. Jameson and E. L. Prebble (owe 15 2-6), 9-8. Combined Doubles—Miss M. Sherris and C. B. Beatson (owe 30 $) beat Miss S. Goss and C. G. Kirk (owe 30), 9-4. CALEDONIAN SPORTS. . SOUTH CANTERBURY MEETING. ASHBURTON SUCCESSES. Several Ashburton competitors took part in Caledonian sports at Waimate and Temuka yesterday. E. C. Samuels was second in the 440 yards New Zealand championship cash running event at Waimate, N. S. Murdoch (Mayfield), placed on scratch, was second in the * tossing the caber handicap, throwing 38ft. llin. In the piping events, G. M. Robertson was second in strathspeys and reels, first in marches (South Island championship) and first in jigs and hornpipes. W. J. Tod met with the following successes in cycling events at Temuka: One mile handicap, first heat, 3; threemile handicap 3; one and a-half mile Caledonian wheel race, second heat, 3. His handicap was scratch in all events. In the Temuka dancing events M. Wilson was first in the Highland fling (boys and girls 14 and under, South Canterbury championship) and Seaun Triubhais (12 years and under).
