SWIMMING.

THE ASHBURTON CLUB. ANNUAL CARNIVAL HELD. Some keen racing was seen at the an* nual carnival of the Ashburton Swimming Club held in the Borough Baths last evening. Entries were fairly good, competitors taking part from the Ashburton, East Ashburton, Mount Somers and Methven Clubs, but in most cases the numbers of entries on the programme were considerably reduced, while the schoolgirls’ events had to be abandoned. The accurate handicapping resulted in some close finishes. The weather conditions were excellent, but the attendance was not large. The president of the Ashburton Club (Mr W. Smith) thanked spectators for their attendance, and also presented the M. Knox Cup to the winner, R. Crum. Keen interest was taken in the swimming of the 100 yards De Beer inter-club relay handicap. The cup for this was won by Ashburton I. in a very close finish from East Ashburton 11. One of the best performances of the evening was that of the schoolboy G. Eyles, who won the inter-club dive.
