THE ALL BLACKS

TEAM AGAINST ENGLAND.

TINDILL AND CORNER TO PLAY. COMMENT ON THE SELECTION. (United Press Association—Copyright.) (Received This Day, 11.50 a.m.) LONDON, December 27. The All Black team to play against England at Twickenham on Saturday, January 4, is as follows: Full-back: Gilbert. Three-quarters: Ball, Oliver, Mitchell. Five-eighths: Caughey and Tindill. Half-back: Corner. Forwards: Lambourn, Hadley, Hore, Manchester, King, Reid, McLean, Mahoney. Tindall and Corner are playing their first international match against England. They earned their places by their exhibition against London Counties. The dropping of Hart is regarded as a surprise as lie is an acknowledged outstanding winger, hut in recent games he was not at his best. While Ball and Mitchell are in great form there may he changes jn the team, but it is expected that Caughey and Oliver will he fit.

The “Evening News” says that Tindall goal-dropping is an ominous sign for England. Tindall scored both times, following a breakaway on the blind side, either by the winger or second half, followed by crosskick which found Tindall up for the bounce. The London Counties seemed to be unable to foil the movement except by stopping the preliminary breakaway. England may probably detail a man to carefully watch Tindall. Howard Marshall, writing in the “Daily Telegraph” says; “It is surprising to find that Mitchell, despite his excellent running against the London Counties, is ousting Hart, who is a beautiful player and would be first choice as wing three-quarter in any of the British unions. Mr Marshall also does not think that the reliable Griffiths should be dropped. Moreover, Sadler did not seem likely to lose his position as scrum half. Apparently Mr Meredith is anxious to speed up the mid-field attack where Tindill and Cornel - will be effective when .staiting movements. Nevertheless the All Blacks will probably miss Griffiths oh the defence although he was slow against Wales. ' SERIOUS PREPARATION. DfNNER ENGAGEMENT CANCELLED. (Received This Day, 12.15 p.m.) LONDON, December 27. “The Daily Mail” says that the New Zealanders are seriously preparing for the international match against England, They originally accepted the Brighton Rugby Club’s invitation to a dinner on Thursday but subsequently cancelled the engagement. The manager (Mr V. R. Meredith) informed the Mayor of Brighton that the civic reception must be as brief as possible. CHICAGO WANTS! A MATCH. AS A FILLIP TO THE GAME, (Received This Day, 12.15 p.m.) LONDON, December 27. Mr Enoch-Mitchell (president of the Chicago Rugby Union) who is visiting Wales, has received a letter from the Union urging him to arrange a match with the All Blacks ivhen en route home, offering substantial guarantee. Mr Mitchell and a few other Welshmen introduced the game into Chicago m 1930. It caught on so well that there are now six teams in the Union. . Mr Mitchell expresses the opinion that the visit of the New Zealanders would provide an immense fillip to tne game. BRIGHTON VISIT CANCELLED. AT PORTHCAWL INSTEAD. (Receiver This Day, 1.30 p.m) LONDON, December 27. The All Blacks made a last-minute change in their arrangements and cancelled their visit to Brighton, where it was learned to-day that Sir Harry Preston would be unable to accommodate them at the Royal Albion Hotel. They will go to-morrow to the Welsh seaside at Porthcawl, where they will remain until they travel to Twickenham. Sir Harry Preston said: “I am ter ribly distressed at a situation ; over which I had no control. The New Zealanders made the reservations' in April, but on Chritsmas Eve we were booked out. I anticipated that most of the visitors would depart on Boxing Day, but they stayed on. I arranged alternative accommodation for a section of the New Zealanders, but it was apparently unsuitable as the leaders require all the party, numbering 40, to be under one roof.”
