LOOKING BACK.

FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Dee. 27, 1885.) Christmas Shops.—Air Lancaster had his butcher’s shop in East Street nicely decorated with evergreens, and a most tasteful, arrangement of bis goods. Messrs Baker and Co., in Tancred Street, has been at especial pains in the decoration of their establishment, while Mr Jas. Tasker enlivened things at the upper end of the town. All these gentlemen had a splendid lot or meat, and the joints displayed were of a nature to completely throw in the background “the roast beef of old England,” of which we hear so much. The grocers, it was apparent, in popular parlance, had put their best foot forward in the arrangement and disposition of their goods. We could not hope to descriue each of the displays in turn, but Mr H. Zander, Air H. M. Carson, Air J. McGregor, Mr A. Urr, Alessrs Qrr and R. Alcorn, Air D. Alacfarlane, Alessrs Bayliss and Co., all had very choice and approximately decorated windows. Mr T. Air J. Ranger, and Airs Ranger's shops had a • most tempting appearance, and fully sustained the reputations gained by Ashburton bakers in the past. Perhape the shops that pleased the eye the most were those of the fruiterers, for the simple reason that the goods admitted of a tempting arrangement more than any other.' Mr T. Hoult, Mr W. C. Davis, Mr Randall and Mrs Davidson had been at evident pains in the display of their wares, and the result was that their different, shops received a good deal of attention. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Dee. 27. 1910.) Shooting Alatch. —On the local range yesterday members of the Ashburton Guards who had not gone away for the holidays fired four matches. The results were:— 200 yards, Private Tutty 34, Private Ross 34; 400 yards, Private Aiutton 36, Corporal W. Gourdie 33: 500 yards, Private Brophy 37, Bugler Alcßenzie 34; 600 yqrds, Bugler AloKenzie 31, Corporal Bradshaw 28. The aggregate results for the four matches and handicaps were: Bugler 11. McKenzie 127, Captain W. R. Tucker 118. Corporal Bradshaw 117, Private Ross 111. Gift to Tuarangi Home.—C. D. Rankin, an inmate of the Tuarangi Home, states that he has received a cheque from Air W. Nosworthy, M.P., on behalf of the inmates of the institution. The Premier’s Visit.—Sir Joseph Ward expects to leave Wellington or Auckland on March 6to attend the Imperial Conference and the Coronation in London. After attending these he will leave for Wellington via Sydney, and expects to arrive at the beginning of August, a few days after Parliament opens. The Premier says that less than two months suffice to pass all the legislation required. He cannot fix the date of the elections, but they will be held before the end of the year.
