Bellamy and Kerr opened to the bowling of P. ID. Read, who ripped them in hard on a fast pitch. Read’s second over was a maiden. Baxter bowled from the other end. Bellamy reached nine with a swift square cut for two off Baxter. Bellamy’s eye was in, and cnee he looked in line for a good score, but in Read’s first over he just tipped a “flyer,” and Griffiths, standing well back, took a smart catch. 13—1—9. ‘ ' , Hadler went in, and Parks replaced Baxter. PLUNKET SHIELD MATCH. AUCKLAND’S BAD START. (Per Press Association). AUCKLAND, This Day. The first Plunket Shield match of the 1935-36 series was commenced at Eden Park this forenoon. Auckland won the toss from Otago and batted on what appeared to be a good wicket. There was a sensational opening. The second ball from Henderson, the fast bowler, saw Postles caught at first slip by Scandrett without score. Weir joined Mills. The second partnership, Mills and Weir, was subdued for half an hour, in which 20 runs were scored. Weir was comfortable to Henderson, turning him to leg. Elms and Dunning provided a double change in the bowling, the former accepting a one-handed catch from Weir. Two for 29. Mills was only eight when Vivian started. When the latter pulled Elms hard to leg Uttlcy held a good catch. Three for 39. Elmes’ two wickets cost five runs. At the luncheon adjournment Auckland had! scored 94 for three wickets.
