SUNK BY EXPLOSION.
WHOLE SHIP’S CREW KILLED.
WAREHOUSES SET ON FIRE. United Press Association—Copyright) SANTOS (Brazil), Dec. 21. The steamer, Britt Marie (3019 tons) was completely destroyed and sank after an explosion. It is feared that the entire crew of 25 were killed, and many near the docks where the steamer was unloading nitrates were injured. The explosion was of terrific force and was heard for miles. The entire superstructure was torn off. The captain’s bridge was thrown 1700 feet and the funnel the same distance in another direction. An iron bar and other wreckage were hurled through dockside buildings. Blazing bags of nitrates were thrown high in the air. Several warehouses were set on fire and for a time a general conflagration was feared, but the fires were extinguished. Six bodies have been recovered. At least 20 were seriously injured.
