LATE SPORTING.

CRICKET.

NI.C.C. v. WELLINGTON. HOME SIDE 115 FOR FIVE. (Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, This Day. Through the condition of the wicket owing to rain overnight and yesterday morning, no play was possible yesterday in the cricket match between Wellington and the M.C.C. team. The start was postponed till 11 o’clock to-day. The match was originally a three-day fixture, .but will conclude on Monday, and the team will leave that evening for Christchurch. The weather is ideal to-day. M.C.C. won the toss and sent Wellington in to bat. The wicket was soft, but promised to become difficult. Blandford and McLeod were the opening batsmen, and Read, the fast bowler, opened the attack at the north end with four men in. the slips and one at deep stop. Parks, the slow medium, bowled from the other end, and was treated with considerable respect, his length and change of pace troubling the batsmen. Blandford 1 survived an early lbw appeal from Parks. Read was spelled by Sims after three overs, which yielded 14 runs. The first halfhour produced 25 runs. Blandford, facing Sims at the north end, was the first to go, falling a victim to the new lbw rule. *26—1—15. Ward was the newcomer, but after a single had been added was smartly caught behind by Griffiths off the first ball from Parks. Ell joined McLeod. So far the scoring had been fairly steady, but without enterprise. The Englishmen’s fielding was very keen. McLeod, after a very cautious exhibition, was clean bowled by Sims by a ball that whipped up off the wicket, and two balls later the same bowler had the next batsman, Ross, caught and bowled. 29 —4—o. Sims’ average was three for 4 off six overs. The score at the luncheon adjournment was 115 for five. Details are: — WELLINGTON. First Innings.
