THE SUMMERJiEETING. SOUTHDOWN WINS TINWALD. SUCCESS FOR MANETHO. Though everything was in its favour, the Ashburton County Racing Club’s summer meeting on the Ashburton Racecourse to-day attracted only a moderate attendance. The Weather was perfect and the track was in the best of order. The programme of eight events was an attractive one, and there was an excellent class of horse engaged. The- Ashburton Silver Band was in attendance during the afternoon and presented a long programme. The arrangements for the meeting were faultless, a fact which was appreciated by patrpns, owners and trainers. A new feature was the new covered-in stand to the .west of the main stand. Then Manetho showed up and went on to win by two lengths from Note Issue, while The Surgeon was half a length back, third. Jack Ahoy was fourth. Time, 1.27. Vervain wore down the opposition and went on to win by a head from the fast-moving Roaming. A length back was the third horse. Coat of Arms. Fourth place was filled by Wine Card. Time, 1.0 4-5. Ace Pot was first past the stand and next in order were Credit Funds, Shadow Queen* St. Helena and Colleen Wrack. Near the end oh the straight Tapdancer came to grief. Its sulky appeared to foul another and it slowly tipped over, throwing the driver (D. Welsh) and falling itself. No damage was done and the driver was not hurt. Tapdancer was able to rise after being released* from some of the harness. Ace Pot continued to lead round the back, Shadow Queeii, Credit Funds and St. Helena being in close attendance. Ace Pot led into the straight, with Zest coming fast in third place, Shadow Queen went ahead to win by a head from Ace Pot, a similar distance separating Ace Pot from Credit Funds. Zest was fourth. Along the back Imperial Spear was a length in front of Courtyard and these two were together with five furlongs to go. Courtyard was first into the straight, with Imperial Spear next from Tout le Monde. Southdown, which had been last most of the way, shot ahead and won by half a length from Queen of Song, which came fast over the last bit of ground. Two lengths away was Courtyard, and Tout to Monde was fourth. Time, 1.38 3-5. WINCHMORE HACK HANDICAP, Of 90 sovs, second horse 13 sovs and third horse 7 sovs from the stake. Six furlongs.
