PENDARVES. The monthly meeting of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union was pr sided. over by the president (Mrs D. B. Ashford, of Rakaia). It was decided to make it the final meeting for the year. Two quilts were handed in to be sent to the girls’ orphanage in Christchurch. The Rev. D. B. Ashford gave a talk on Africa. It was arranged to hold a meeting in Rakaia, when Mrs Ashford would give her report from conference. The hostesses were Mrs A. Shaw and Miss Freda Ironside. CHERTSEY, Mrs W. Harristoii. (Dorie) presided in the Chertsey Hall, when institutes representing the group were present. Mrs Harrison gave a short talk on the objects of groups. The speaker* was Miss (Davis, of Woodbury, Geraldine. Musical items were given by Mrs R. A. Oakley and Miss Lee. Mrs J. W* Watson took the chair, and conducted the ordinary monthly meeting of the Chertsey Women’s Institute. Arrangements were made to hold a picnic to Tlmaru in December. A successful sale was made of goods on behalf of the disabled soldiers. The competitions resulted as follow Prettiest cup and saucer: Mrs Redman 1, Mrs H. N. Copland 2, Mrs Paul Doig 3, Mrs J. P. Cameron 4. Butter sponge, decorated : Miss E. Magson 1. Premier bloom: Miss Lorna Lambic 1, Mrs Andrew Doig 2, Mrs F. Richards 3. The hostesses were Mesdames Andrew Doig, John Doig, Rayneiy Murchie and Donald Campbell.

RAKAIA. Mr H. J. Conway presided at the monthly meeting of the Rakaia School Committee bn Monday evening. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of Mr J. Connolly, M.P., and all present stood as a mark of respect. It was decided to procure a first aid outfit for the school. The headmaster’s report showed that the roll number was 127, and the average attendance for the month was 116. The balance-sheet of the recent dance showed a credit of '£4 2s 3d. It was decided not to hold school sports this year, but it was left to the headmaster to make arrangements for the school championships to he run off. The Presbyterian Bible Class was granted the use of the school and grounds for the Easter camp. A motion of sympathy with Miss Box in the death of her father was carried in silence.

A meeting of the Rakaia Athletic and Cycling Club was held in the Library on Monday evening, the president (Mr W. Sliellock) presiding. Correspondence was received from the organiser of the Timaru to Christchurch road race regarding the making of arrangements for a milk station at Rakaia. It was decided that the club would make all the necessary arrangements and also supply the milk.
