RIDDLE SOLVED
ABANDONED YACHT FOUND. • “Mystery” surrounding the discovery in mid-Atlantic of an abandoned luxury yacht by the British steamer Aztec was solved soon alter the vessel arrived at Avonmouth, recently. The owner of the yacht, Mr A. R. G, Welch, a wealthy Philadelphian, and a crew of five were picked up in heavy seas on August 27 by the Italian liner Rex. The abandoned yacht was sighted by the Aztec on September 1, about 700 miles north-east of Bermuda, and Captain Carden, of the Aztec, sent a party on board. Chief Officer Chanter, who was in charge of the party, stated at Avonmouth that the boat had obviously struck some heavy weather. “The two masts were trailing overboard and the skylights were smashed. There was no sign of life, but there was' plenty of food and water, and both lifeboats were intact.
“There, was nothing to show why or when the crew had abandoned her. In one ,cabin were some women’s clothing anct- j n few children’s toys.”
