BOXING.
LOUGHRAN BEATS STRICKLAND.
POINTS DECISION IN 10 ROUNDS
(Received This Day, 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, November 12. In a 10-round bout at Wemsley, the American, Tommy Loughran, outpointed Maurice Strickland, the New Zealand box'er. Loughran was the better stylist, but often lacked punching power. He was twice cautioned hi the second round for hitting low, but scored freely in the opening rounds. Strickland became more forceful as the fight progressed:, but was frequently outboxed by Loughran, who was cleverly avoid-
ing Strickland’s right and simultaneously scoring heavily with well-placed body deliveries. He opened a cut above Strickland’s right eye in the eigth round. Fierce exchanges marked the closing rounds, Strickland landing a terrific right to the jaw in tho ninth, but Lougbran was an. easy points’ winner.
This was Strickland’s second bout in England. He recently decisively defeated the South African, Ben Foord, on a technical knock-out in the third round.
PALMER OUTPOINTS WENSTOB:
(Receiyed This Day, 1.10 p.m.) LONDON, November 12. Ambrose Palmer, of Australia (12.7) outpointed tne Canadian, Ed. Wenstob (12.5) at Wembley. .Palmer was considerably undermatched and outboxed Wenstob, hut his punches did not carry sufficient weight to encourage those desiring to see him matched against Petersen for the Empire championship. Palmer used only his light in in-fighting, depending otherwise on a straight left, with which the Canadian was unable to deal. Accordingly he was soon bleeding at the nose, at which the Australian continually poked. Palmer occasionally connected with a reasonable left hook, but whenever he tried a knock-out Wenstob was not there.
Palmer* entered the ring with a patch over his ' left eye, which Wenstob opened badly in the sixth round. The Canadian, a rough and ready boxer, made Palmer appear less effective than his supporters hoped, the Australian being more pre-occupied avoiding a chance knock-out . than obtaining one.
