THE TURF.

CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB.

INCREASE IN INVESTMENTS.

(Special to the “Guardian.”) CHRISTCHURCH, This Hay,

. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s metropolitan meeting was continued at Riccarton yesterday in dull but fine weather. The outlook late on Sunday night was far from proihising, but fortunately the rain ceased early in the morning. The track had another good soaking, but the use of a roller during the morning improved the surface considerably, and the going was remarkably • good in the circumstances, the times being only slightly slower than on the first day. The attendance was well up to a Derby Day average, and speculation was again brisk, the sum of £28,907 10s (win £12,695 10s, place £16,212) being handled, as against £22,451 (win £9623, place £12,828) last year. The following is a comparative table showing the investments on Cup Day and Derby Day for seven years:—

Concluding results: — Criterion' Handicap, of 300 sovs; •seven.furlongs —6 (5) Sea Fox 7.2 (R. Savage) 1, 3 (3) Variant 7.8 2, 10 (10) Silver Ring 9.13 3. JAMIESON DISQUALIFIED.

OUTCOME OF V.R.C. INQUIRY. MELBOURNE, November 11. The Victorian Racing Club stewards to-day disqualified the . owner, G. Tancred, the trainer, J. T. Jamieson, the jockey, E. Bartle, and the gelding Country Party for 12 months. The disqualifications are the outcome of an inquiry held by the stewards into the running of Country Party in the Railway High-weight Handicap on. November 5 compared with the gelding’s running in the Batman Stakes, which he won on Saturday. It is reported that Bartle in evidence stated that he met with interference in the Railway High-weight Handicap, otherwise he would have finished close to the place-getters. It was considered' that the run had sharpened Country Party, and in those circumstances it was decided to back him on Saturday. The disqualification will be a severe blow to Jamieson, who comparatively recently purchased and improved a big training establishment near Randwick racecourse. It will be recalled that Bartle a year ago incurred l a month’s suspension on the final day of the Flemington meeting for interference on Upoko Ariki, who strangely enough is a full-brother to Country Party. Tancred, who is a New Zealander, is a well-known figure on Sydney racecourses. Notice of intention to appeal against disqualification has been given to the Victoria Racing Club by those concerned.

SYDNEY, November 11.

Mr Jameson’s promising two-year-old cold Presto, by Captain Bunsby from Rapide, broke his leg while training at Randvvick and had to be destroyed. Presto dislodged his rider and collided with a fence. He had never been raced.
