MONTALTO. The monthly meeting of the Montalto Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held at the residence of Mrs R-. J. Anderson. Mrs Anderson presided. It was decided to send a donation to the leper fund. Mrs R. Austin (Mayfield) gave an interesting demonstration on the curing of skins. Competitions were judged by Mrs Austin as follow : —Sponge sandwich: Miss Jessie McCormick 1; juniors, Peggy Anderson 1, Betty Anderson 2, Amy Woods 3. . Knitted article, summer weight: Mrs F. Dellow 1; juniors, Amy Woods 1. Bloom: Mrs H. Wright 1, Mrs J. McCormick 2, Miss I. McCormick 3. Flowering shrub: Mrs R. J. Anderson 1, Mrs J. McCormick 2, Miss Betty Anderson 3. The hostesses were Mrs H. Wright and Mrs K. J. Whiting.

MAYFIELD. The monthly meeting of the Mayfield School Committee was held in the school. The chairman (Mr R. Oakley) presided, and there was a full attendance of members. The secretary was instructed to write to the Education Board for a grant for a hew flagpole for the school. The monthly meeting of the Mayfield branch of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union was held in the church vestry, Mrs W. S. Greenslade presiding. A missionary letter was received from Sister Annie, of Rnatahuna. Members of the union who took charge of the produce stall in Ashburton reported that good business was done, and a satisfactory sum would he available toward the funds of the women’s superannuation funds.

SEAFIELD. Thei’e was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. Mrs R. J. Martin presided. It was decided to sell a quantity of health stamps in the district. A very interesting debate on “Is too much time and money spent on sport nowadays?” Was won by the affirmative. The sides were as follow: —Affirmative: Mrs W. Lambie, Mrs W. Waller and Mrs 11. Baynesj negative: Mrs T. Johnson, Mrs H. Driscoll and Mrs A. P. Bruce. Three new members were elected. Results of competitions were: —Floating bowl: Mrs W. Lambie 1, Mrs J. Gregory 2, Mrs R. Baynes 3. Afternoon cream cakes: Miss J. Mitchell 1, Mrs R. Grice and Mrs J. McDonald (equal) 2. Article made from salt bag: Seniors, Mrs J. McDonald 1, Mrs J. Bruce 2, Mrs R. Baynes 3; juniors, Miss N. Bennison 1, Miss M. Martin 2, Miss J. Bruce 3. The hostesses were Mrs J. Mitchell and Mrs J. McDonald.

A large gathering attended a card and dance evening held in the schoolroom in aid of the school funds. The cards resulted in a tie between Mrs 11. Baynes and Mrs G. Moorhead. In the play-off Mrs Baynes was the winner. Mrs R. Grice and Miss J. Bruce tied for third place. Mr L. Scott was the winner of the men’s prize, with Mr J. Bruce second and Mr W. Anderson and Mr N. Bennison (equal) third. A dance was held later, when Mr R>. Baynes was master of ceremonies.

WAKANUI The members of the Wakanui branch of the Young Helpers’ League in connection .with Dr. Barnardo’s Homes were entertained at the residence of the president (Mrs T. Butterick) on the occasion of their annual box-open-ing. Scrambles, treasure hunts, races and games were enjoyed', and afternoon tea was served. As a result of the children’s effort for the year £5 4s was donated to the league funds. Nceline Ford, Margaret Cairns, Wallace Moore, Lloyd Taylor and Ronald Amos qualified for the Y.H.L. badges, and Neal Butterick for the silverhandled knife. Miss Cowan was thanked for her work as secretary during the Mst two years, and Miss Mitchell was welcomed. Jessie Hendrie, on behalf of the members, thanked Mrs Butterick for the, happy afternoon.

HINDS. The committee of the Hinds Tennis Club met in the Domain building last evening, all members being present. It was decided to hold a dance on November 21.
