EGYPT AND BRITAIN
RESENTMENT OVER ATTITUDE.
“PARTNER, NOT A VASSAL.”
(United Press Association—Copyright)
LONDON, November 5. The Cairo correspondent of ‘"The Times” says political opinion is painfully impressed by a message from London, allegedly representing British official views, declaring that it would be a tragedy if Eigypt attempted to take advantage of the present position to obtain inopportune undertakings. The •statement has aroused disappointment owing to the suggestion that Bi’itain is unwilling to heed what are considered to be just demands, and resentment that the Egyptian attitude has been misunderstood.
It is felt that Egypt is not seeking to exploit the situation; on the contrary, she is ready to do her utmost to co-operate with Britain, and asks only to be treated as a partner and not a vassal.
Political circles regard the statement as creating a new situation necessitating the revision of Egypt’s attitude, for which early meetings will he held. A movement is also afoot to obtain the signatures of all leading politicians to a declaration that they will not accept office unless Britain shows herself less unbending.
