FLOODS RECEDE

SMALL LOSS OF STOCK. (Per Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., October 31. Because of the (accumulation of flood water which was unable to find any release through its natural outlets, the situation at Rangiotu, with the Oroua River running at a dangerous level, assumed a serious aspect last night. However, the Manawatu River, which has its* confluence with the Oroua near this point, began to fall, with the result that the discharge of water from the Oroua was facilitated. A section of the main road became temporarily blocked during the night, but the water is now receding fast and traffic is almost normal. A small loss of stock occurred in the Taonui Basin, 15 pigs and 20 sheep being caught and drowned when a culvert burst. , No further slips came down in tne Manawatu Gorge, which is open for traffic. The Whirokino road at South Foxton is still impassable, and is likely to be so for several days.

IMPROVEMENT IN WAIRARAPA.

MASTERTON, October 31. No extension of the flooding of the lower Wairarapa is anticipated. The Ruamabanga River has fallen considerably, and the lake has fallen slightly. Water is still flowing through the breach in the Kahutara stop-bank. The lagoons in that region will rise till they reach the lake level. The main Kahutara road and adjacent areas are expected to he under water for the week.
