FIFTY YEARS SYNE.

(From the “Guardian,” Nov. 1, 1885.)

Tea and Public Meeting.—The anniversary tea and public meeting in connection with the Wesleyan Sunday School was held in the Church last evening. There was only a moderate attendance. Following are the names of the ladies who presided over, the different tables:—Mesdames G. W. Andrews, Pearson, J. Orr, Fox,, S. Alcorn, Collins, Cawsey, It. Alcorn, Sparrow, H. M. Carson, Misses Kingsbury, Potter, Blarvey, Harband, Jones, Fox, and M. Alcorn. At the after meeting the chair was occupied by Mr W. H. Collins (superintendent of the Sunday School). The secretary (Mr H. It. Steel) read the report, which stated that the school generally showed a high spiritual. tone. . Addresses were given by Mr J: IS. Buchanan, the Rev. T. J. Wallis, Mr C. Ray, and Mr H. M. Jones, the ltev. D. McNicoll thanking all. Appropriate hymns were sung by the scholars under Mr Ray’s leadership, Miss Potter presiding at the organ.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the ‘Guardian,” Nov. 1, 1910.) Canterbury Show Entries.—The entries for the Canterbury Metropolitan Show show a market increase over those of 1909. The following are the figures for each year, those for 1909 being given in parentheses:—Sheep 1050 (948), cattle 233 (204), horses 583 (535), pigs dogs 17 (11), dairy produce, etc., 156 (205), judging competitions 38 (49); totals, 2145 (2022).. Lawn Tennis Club.—At a meeting of the committee of' the St. Andrew’s Lawn Tennis Club held on Saturday evening,' Mr F. L. Andrews was appointed to fill the vacancy on the executive caused by the resignation of Mr S. J. Thomas. It was decided to start club handicap tournaments for ladies and gentlemen respectively at once.

Vital Statistics.—The vital statistics for the Ashburton County for the month ,of October are as follows Births 34* deaths 10, marriages 9. For the corresponding month last year the figures were: Births 28, deaths 5, marriages 6.
