FIRST ASSAULT REPULSED. - LONDON, October 21. The correspondent of the Associated Press with the Italians on the southern front says that fierce fighting, in which the Abyssinians are believed to have suffered heavy casualties, has occurred.

Air observers- reported that a.strong force of Abyssinians was marching south along the Tafan River. General Graziani, assuming that they were Nasibu’s flank, attacked with bombs and machine-guns from the air before dawn, preparatory to an attack by infantry transported under cover of darkness.

The Abyssinians, after repulsing the first attack, were routed by reinforcements and fled toward Gorahei.

REPORT DENIED FROM ROME.
