ENTERTAINMENTS

ST. JAMES THEATRE. A witty, pungent and at times devastating story of “smart people” and their amours is contained in “The Scoundrel,” showing at the St. James Theatre tornight and on Monday night, and starring Noel Coward, genius of the English and American stage, in his motion picture debut. Included in the characters are Julie Haydon, Stanley Ridges, Hope Williams, and Rosita Moreno. Noel Coward plays a literary Casanova, a man who plays at love until he is killed in an aeroplane accident. Then he finds that his soul can* not rest in peace and that he must return to earth to atone for the ill he has done to the one girl who really loved him.

MAJESTIC THEATRE. “Sanders of the River” will he the chief attraction at the Majestic Theatre to-night and on Monday night. Based on the popular Edgar Wallace stories of the same title, it deals with British rule in Africa, a subject which hitherto has been ignored by British film producers. It represents the most difficult film task ever attempted by a producer, and succeeds triumphantly. Leslie Banks and Paul Robeson are superb in the principal parts; it is difficult to decide whether one more admires the brilliant understanding of Banks’ District Commissioner or the finely etched Bosambo and the really magnificent singing of Robeson.

ST. ANDREW’S SPRING FAIR. The annual spring fair to be conducted by St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church will be held next Thursday, the opening ceremony having been arranged for 2 p.m. Stalls of all kinds are being organised* and preparations are well advanced.
