FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Oct. 19, 1885.) Athletic Sports Grounds.—The annual meeting of shareholders in the Ashburton Cricket and Athletic Sports Ground Committee was held on Wednesday evening. Mr D. Thomas was in the chair. The balance-sheet showed: Assets —Freehold property £737 3s 2d, plant £93 6s Bd, arrears of calls £164 4s, rent due £50.; total, £1044 14s 10d. Liabilities—Ashburton Building Society £470 js lid, bank overdraft £3l 5s 3d; balance of assets over liabilities, £543 Is Bd. The retiring directors, Messrs C. P. Cox, T. Bullock, and S. Saunders wefe re-elected. Judging Distance Drill.—The two Ashburton Volunteer Companies have been ordered to parade without arms in front of Quill’s Hotel next Wednesday for the annual judging distance drill. It is hoped that there will be a full muster on the occasion.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO.
(From the I 'Guardian,” Oct. 19, 1910.) Death of Horses.—Deaths of mares during the present foaling season have been unusually numerous. On Sunday Mr D. B/Carruthers, Dorie, lost a draught mare valued at £45, and Mr T. A. Pearce, Tinwald, had the misfortune to lose his brood trotting mare, Agapanthus, in a similar way. Both horses were insured in the Yorkshire Office.
The Water Scheme. —During the past week rapid headway has been made by the contractor in laying pipes for the water scheme and other work in connection with the installation of water is being expeditiously pushed ahead. One noticeable feature is the increase in the number of house services that are being connected with the mains.
Railway Requirements.—Sir Joseph AA r ard says that there are still required in New Zealand, railway's which are estimated to cost from £15,000,000 to £20,000,000. ■
