METHVEN A very enjoyable dance was held in the Anglican Hall on Saturday evening under the auspices of the Methven Football Club, with a view to raising funds to assist a number of players injured during the season just closed. There was a very large attendance, and the fund will benefit materially. Music was supplied by Cook’s orchestra, extras being played by Miss Willis (Ashburton). Mr W. J. Dolan was master of ceremonies.

HINDS. There was a. large attendance at the annual ball of the Lynnford Miniature Rifle Club, held in the Hinds Hall on Saturday evening. Visitors were present from Ashburton, Willowby, Alford Forest and the, surrounding districts. The hall was prettily decorated with red and green streamers. The music was l supplied by Mitchell’s orchestra (Ashburton), and extras were played by Miss L. Dell and Mr B. Vqssey. A Monte Carlo waltz was Avon by Mi' Fagan and Miss Healy. The president (Mr W. Henderson) presented the cups and trophies won during the year, as follows: —N. Bauerle, club’s championship, Chapman’s cup, teams’ cup and a trophy; J. E. The Hinds School Committee’s fortnightly euchre tournament Avas held in the school on Saturday evening. Prizes Avere won by _Miss I. Daulton and Mr Williams. The Rev. H. A. Childs, of Timvald, conducted the evening service at St. Luke’s Church yesterday. The weather during the week-end was ay arm Avitli a strong northwesterly wind. ’ 1 The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Hinds Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.F., was held on Saturday evening, the N.G. (Bro. E. WILLOWBY. The Eiffelton Educational and Social Club held a very successful concert in aid of the Eiffelton School funds, m the Willowbvl Hall on Friday evening. The , club is’to be congratulated upon the performance, the stage setting being particularly effective. The Original Ode, the opening chorus, was given by the company, followed by a. vocal solo, “The Wheeitapper’s Song,” by Mr J. Johnstone; musical monologue, Miss Mary Taylor; quartette, “The Catastrophe,” Messrs J. Johnstone, J. BSmith, N. Stoddart, and R, Davidson ; solo “Dorothy Perkins,’ Miss lv. Johnstone; quartette, “Sweet and Loav,” Miss Johnstone, Miss Jean Taylor, Messrs Norman Stoddart and J: 1Smith; solo and chorus, -“Oh SAveet Mystery of Life,” Mr N. Stoddait, humorous sketch, “Lime Green,” Miss Mary Taylor and Mr H. Hawkins; chorus, “Sing as Ave Go,” the company; quartettes, “Calm is the Sea and “CaAV-CaAV,” Messrs R. Davidson, N. Stoddart, J. Johnstone, and J. 13. Smith, solo, “Smilin’ Thru,” Mr J. 13. Smith; quartette, “Drink to Me Only,” Miss K. Johnstone, Mrs U. Moore, Messrs N. Stoddart and J. 13. Smith; recitation, “On the Art ot making-up One’s Mind,” Miss Jean Taylor; solo, “Serenade,” Mr R. Davidson; cliorus, Funiculi-Tuniculn, “Hit and Miss,” a series of personal witty couplets originated and given by Messrs H. H. fcffiAvkins and J. 13. LOWCLIFFE. There was a good attendance at the final euchre party of the season held in the Lowcliife Schoolroom. Prizes were awarded as follows: Ladies, Mrs Wallace; gentlemen, Mr Wallace; aggregate for the season: Ladies, Mrs N. Hansen; gentlemen, Mr M. Hansen. At the weekly Bible Class held on Thursday evening, Mr E. Hamilton presided over a fair attendance. The subject for study was taken from St. John’s Gospel, chapter 16, and was entitled: “The New Ally for Dark Days.” After several days of north-west winds, the country is. looking dry, and a good rain would do much good. WAKANUI.

There was a large attendance of members and friends at the open meeting of the Wakanui Womtti’s Institute, held in the Memorial Hall on Wednesday. Airs D. Butterick presided, and extended a welcome to all visitors. Mesdames Butterick and Taylor were appointed delegates to the half-yearly council meeting to be held in Ashburton. It was decided to hold the next meeting a iveek earlier. Airs 1). Wilson was presented with a small gift for her daughter hv Airs Taylor. A large display of work done by members was on view. Community! singing was led by Airs H. J. Constable, and items were given by Mesdames liourne, Constable, and Minogue. Airs Green was tile accompanist. MARONAN. There Avas a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Maronan Women’s Institute, liolcl in the schoolroom on Thursday afternoon. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect for the late Mr J. Connolly, M.P., and the secretary Avas instructed to Avrite a letter to the relatives. Mrs Scales reported on the financial success of the Spring -Flower Slioav, and also the Health Camp meeting held in Ashburton. The roll call, “An Amusing Story,” provided much entertainment. During the afternoon, 1 Miss Isitt played the piano, and Avas given a vote of thanks, on the motion of Mrs J. Davidson.
