FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Oct. 7, 1885.) Excursion to AYellington.—About 125 persons left Lyttelton on the Friendly Societies’ excursion to Wellington yesterday morning. Several persons left Ashburton by the express train on Tuesday night to take part in the excursion. ■_ . Wakanui Road Board.—-The election of a member to fill the vacancy! in the representation of No. 1 ward on the AVakanui Road Board takes place tomorrow. The gentlemen nominated are Messrs'F. T. Mayo and W. W.
White. Drill Parade. —The usual weekly parade of the Ashburton Rifles and Guards was held at the drill shed on Tuesday night. Forty’/ Rifles and 32 Guards were present and Sergeant-Major Jones put the men through a variety of evolutions. . ; Angling at Nelson.—Anglers. a.t Nelson are having good times. One gentleman, on the opening day of the season, secured 14 fish, with an aggregate weight of 421bs. Some of the larger ones t limed the scale at about 4lbs. each.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Oct. 7, 1910.) The Fishing Season. —Anglers, who have been 1 successful in catching trout since the opening of the season. on October 1, state that while being considerably more numerous than last year, the fish are generally in very poor condition. Comparatively few fish have been caught at the months of the various County livers, so far, but when the rivers get into good fishing order, and the weather becomes more settled, anglers confidently anticipate a good season. A large number .of trout ranging from lib to 2lbs have been taken in tlie upper readies of the Ashburton river.
Ashburton Lawn Tennis Club. —The annual meeting of the Ashburton Lawn Tennis Club was held last evening. Mr C. AA\ Purnell was re-elected president, Mr T. Bullock and Mr H. Friedlander vice-presidents; treasurer. Mr A. Bruce; secretary, Mr T. McDonald; committee, Messrs D. Friedlander, H. L. Barker, L. Thomas, G. H. Buchanan, J. McLeod, F. AY. Seldon, and L. R. Hardie; auditor, Mr H. H. Fooks; delegates to Sports Association, Messrs F. AV. Seldon., T. McDonald, and L. R, Hardie; delegates to Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association, Messrs P. 'H. Cox and W. H. Kiver; ladies’ committee, Mesdapies Buchanan, D. Friedlander, and E. Nicoll and Miss Denshire.
