Cricket.—ln order to create a livelier interest in cricket in Ashburton, the , match committee of the Cricket Club lias determined to play as many club matches as possible, and with this object, in view has arranged the following . match for to-morrow afternoon Messrs W. Amos, G. Andrews, J. A. Caygill (captain), W. B. Denshire, J. Kneen, T. Leahy, F. Makeig E. Marsh, W. Mackay,, J. Purchase, H, H. Secretan ; emergencies—D. Thomas and Parkinson, versus Messrs G. Bunting, J. A. Orawshaw, W. Edwards, Fleming, J. A. Fletcher, A. Fooks, E'. Fooks, J. C. N. Grigg, the Rev. E. A. Scott, W. Strange, C. F. .Wronghton; emergencies—C. Chapman, O. Burton, E. H. Peter and! Strachney. Channelling.—On the motion of Messrs Quill and' Thomas, the Ashburton Borough Council has carried the following:—“That the Works Committee be requested to consider the advisableness of channelling the streets in the more populous parts of the , town.” Mr Quill told the Council that a great deal of sickness existed in the town,. which was attributable to the bad condition of some of the present unformed side channels.

Loy, representatives of the Ashburton Baptist Church, left Ashburton yesterday to attend the New Zealand 1 Baptist conference which opened in Dunedin to-day. Hockey.—’The following will represent the Southern Cross Football Club in a hockey match, against the Ashburton Hockey Club to-morrowT. Slade, D. McKenzie, E. Clarke, k. Clarke, M. Rooney, G. £>mith, J. Hegarty and Fitzgerald (4). . Certificates Presented.—At Baring Square Ohurcli last evening framed certificates for successes achieved at the recent North Canterbury Sunday School Union’s examination were presented by the Rev. H. E. Bellhouse to the following:—lda Andrews, Harold Beaumont, Irene Beaumont, Geoffrey Bellhouse, Daisy Bramley and Clarice Pollock. The Union’s gold medal for highest marks in Grade E was presented to Geoffrey Bellhouse by the superintendent (Mr Chas. Dixon), . . Poultry Society.—A meeting of the committee of this Society was held last evening when there were present Messrs G. Bundy (chairman),, 1. Breeze, W. Robinsbn, E. Parian H. Shepherd, T. Messent and F. Nieholls.
