LOOKING BACK

FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Oct. 1, 1885.) Wakanui, Road Board Vacancy. — Messrs F. T. Mayo and W, W. Wnite have been nominated to fill the vacancy in the representation of Ward 1 on the Wakanui Road Board caused by the resignation of Mr W. H. Zouch. Racing Club.—The committee of the Ashburton Racing Club held a meeting on Thursday night, when there were present: Messrs C. W. Purnell (in the chair), E. G. Crisp, R. Friedlander, A. Harrison, M. Friedlander, Dr. T. Leahy and Dr. Ross. The -secretary was authorised to make arrangements through the co-operation of the Mayor for a cheap excursion train between Christchurch and Ashburton on the first day of the club’s spring race meeting.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Oct-. 1, 1910.) Willowby Circuit. —The quarterly meeting of the Willowby Circuit Church officials was held at the residence of Mr S. S. Chapman. The Rev. S. H. D. Peryman presided. Mr S. J. Werren (home missionary) was also present. Messrs Jewell and Chapman were elected substitute representatives to the District Synod. Mr Werren was unanimously recommended as a candidate for the ministry. Sunday School Anniversary.—Special services were conducted at the Seafield Schoolhouse on Sunday, the Rev. R, J. Liddell speaking in the morning and the Rev. E. Whitehouse in the afternoon. Later in the week a concert was held, items being given as follow: — Miss Alington, overture; Mr Trevurza, song; Mr Alington, violin solo; Miss Butterick, recitation; Mr Dalton, song; Mr Stewart Taylor, recitation; Miss Butterick, song; Mr Frampton, recitation; Mi- Thomas, recitation. Stock Breeding.—Mr Grigg, of Longbeach, is evidently taking a greater interest in stock-breeding than he has done for a number of years past. At the present time he has over 40 cows in full profit, and a herd of over 700 purebred Berkshire pigs, large proportion of which are prime baconers. On Thursday last Mr Grigg disposed of 50 of the herd to an export buyer. To realise that pig-breeding is made remunerative, and to gain some idea of how the raising of this class of stock should be carried' out, farmers would do well to pay a visit to Mr Grigg’s estate.
